The flying squirrel is a nocturnal rodent and usually nests in the hollow of a tree. It has excellent hearing and long sensitive whiskers, which help it to feed in the dark. In the autumn, flying squirrels stock up on food for the winter. They mainly like plants (seeds, nuts, young shoots, fruits and buds) and can also feed on insects and bird eggs.
